Acupressure is a therapeutic technique derived from traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) that involves applying pressure to specific points on the body to promote health and alleviate ailments. This method, rooted in self-massage and acupuncture point therapy, is simple to learn and can be performed anytime, making it a popular choice for managing insomnia and other sleep disturbances.
Before targeting insomnia-specific points, familiarize yourself with these fundamental pressing methods:
The following sequence targets points that calm the mind, regulate Qi, and promote relaxation. Perform each step gently but firmly.
Located at the temples, in the depression about one finger-width behind the midpoint between the outer corner of the eye and the eyebrow. Press with both thumbs simultaneously for 10 times.
At the top of the head, on the midline where a line from the apex of both ears meets. Use the tip of your middle finger to press 10 times.
In the inner corner of the eye, just beside the nose bridge. Press with the pads of your thumb and index finger for 10 times.
Behind the earlobe, in the depression between the mandible and the mastoid process. Use the index finger of a fist to press both sides simultaneously for 10 times.
At the inner end of the eyebrow, in the depression above the inner corner of the eye. Press with both thumbs for 10 times.
On the back of the neck, about half an inch lateral to the midline, at the hairline. Press with both index fingers, alternating left and right, 10 times each side.
Below the occipital bone, in the depression between the sternocleidomastoid and trapezius muscles. Press with both index fingers, 10 times each side.
