The Meridian Pressing and Rubbing Method (经络循按法) is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) manual therapy that involves applying various techniques along the pathways of the body's meridians. These techniques are performed in a back-and-forth manner to promote the circulation of Qi (vital energy) and blood within the meridian system. While each method has its unique characteristics and applications, all share the common goal of enhancing the flow of Qi and blood.

The method includes several specific techniques, each with distinct functions:

Except for the two forms of 'Pushing and Supplementing/Draining' (循推补泻), the other five techniques follow a specific ratio: they are applied 2 times against the direction of meridian flow (from the end toward the start) and 3 times with the direction of flow (from the start toward the end). This 2:3 ratio corresponds to the numbers 6 (yin) and 9 (yang) in TCM numerology. The 2 repetitions against the flow (6 yin) drain pathogenic factors (evil Qi), while the 3 repetitions with the flow (9 yang) tonify the body's righteous Qi. This aligns with the principle of 'first drain the yin (evil), then supplement the yang (righteous).'

The effectiveness of the Meridian Pressing and Rubbing Method depends on flexible application according to the patient's specific condition. Practitioners must combine these techniques appropriately to achieve the desired therapeutic outcomes.
