The first time I got a TCM constitution analysis, the practitioner spent forty-five minutes asking me questions: “Do you prefer cold or warm drinks? Do you sweat easily? How are your nails?”
Then she showed me the pattern, and everything about my health struggles suddenly made sense. I was a “Qi Deficiency with Dampness” type. Knowing this, I could finally stop fighting my nature and start working with it.
What Is TCM Constitution?
TCM constitution classifies people into distinct types based on their inherent balance of Yin, Yang, Qi, Blood, and the Five Elements. Understanding your type helps you choose foods that work for you, prevent diseases you are predisposed to, and address root causes instead of symptoms.
The Nine TCM Constitution Types
1. Balanced Type: Rare. Adaptable, rarely sick, emotionally stable.
2. Qi Deficiency Type: Exhausted always. Pale, weak-voiced, prone to colds. Focus: Warming, strengthening foods like congee and sweet potatoes.
3. Yang Deficiency Type: Cold always. Hands, feet, lower back. Focus: Warming foods like ginger, cinnamon, and lamb.
4. Yin Deficiency Type: Hot from inside. Night sweats, dry mouth. Focus: Cooling foods like pears and watermelon.
5. Phlegm-Dampness Type: Feel heavy, foggy, bloated. Focus: Light, drying foods like barley and radish.
6. Damp-Heat Type: Inflamed. Acne, bitter taste. Focus: Cooling foods like mung beans and cucumber.
7. Blood Stasis Type: Bruise easily, varicose veins. Focus: Circulation foods like turmeric and hawthorn.
8. Qi Stagnation Type: Stressed, tight, emotional. Focus: Soothing foods like mint and jasmine tea.
9. Special Constitution: Allergies, hypersensitivity.
How to Determine Your Type
Tongue: Pale = Qi or Yang deficiency. Red = Yin deficiency. Thick coating = dampness.
Temperature: Hot = likely Yin deficiency. Cold = likely Yang deficiency. Heavy = dampness.
Living According to Your Type
What works for your friend might harm you. When I drank green smoothies because my friend swore by them, I got worse. Green smoothies are cooling, perfect for her Yin-deficient type, terrible for my Qi-deficient type with dampness.
Quick reference:
- Identify type: Look at chronic, persistent symptoms
- Key marker: Temperature preference points to Yin-Yang status
- Warning sign: Lifestyle changes not working
