Meridians and Acupuncture Points: Your Body Energy Highway System

When my acupuncturist placed a single needle in my forearm and said, “This point controls your entire digestive system,” I was skeptical. Then my bloating disappeared within minutes.

The meridian system is one of TCM most controversial concepts in Western medicine, and also one of its most therapeutically effective.

What Are Meridians?

Meridians (Jing Luo) are channels through which Qi flows throughout the body. Think of them as a subway system, with major lines (meridians) and stations (acupuncture points).

There are 12 primary meridians, each connected to a major organ:

  • Lung: Controls breath and skin
  • Large Intestine: Controls elimination
  • Stomach: Controls digestion
  • Spleen: Controls transformation and transportation
  • Heart: Controls blood and consciousness
  • Small Intestine: Controls absorption
  • Bladder: Controls water metabolism
  • Kidney: Controls growth and reproduction
  • Pericardium: Protects the Heart
  • Triple Burner: Controls temperature regulation
  • Gallbladder: Controls decision-making and bile
  • Liver: Controls planning and blood storage

Understanding Acupuncture Points

Acupuncture points (Xue Wei) are specific locations on meridians where Qi can be accessed and manipulated. Modern research shows these points correspond to areas of increased electrical conductivity.

Common powerful points:

  • LI4 (Hegu): General pain relief, headache, stress
  • ST36 (Zusanli): Digestive strength, immune boost
  • LV3 (Taichong): Liver Qi flow, emotional release
  • PC6 (Neiguan): Nausea, anxiety, heart function
  • SP6 (Sanyinjiao): Gynecological issues, stress

Acupressure: Self-Care Without Needles

You can stimulate these points yourself with firm, steady pressure:

For headache: Press LI4 on the web between thumb and index finger for 2-3 minutes.

For anxiety: Press PC6 on the inner forearm, three finger-widths from the wrist crease.

For digestion: Press ST36 on the lower leg, one hand-width below the kneecap.

Signs of Meridian Imbalance

  • Pain along specific pathways
  • Organ dysfunction without clear medical cause
  • Emotional patterns linked to specific organs

Quick reference:

  • LI4: Pain relief, headaches
  • ST36: Digestive support
  • PC6: Nausea, anxiety
  • Warning: Do not self-needle, but acupressure is safe
